I think the notion is for every man who ever had a set, and wore them proudly. Life isn't nice, friendly, kind. Even our friends, and women, will try to beat us down. Enemies? Who needs them, but they are out there.
Still? I wouldn't have it any other way. Might walk with a limp, and not go out every day, but I'm... still an ally tom when I must go out. Check, mate.
