If you live within 50 miles of a coal power plant, then you get more mercury from the exhaust of that plant in a year than you will from 5 broken lightbulbs.

Not in my home. I stocked up on incandescent bulbs and literally have a lifetime supply. Those CFL bulbs lasted about 6 months in my house before they were replaced either due to complete failure or what I took to be a fire hazard by their "strobing" upon applying power.
