60% of Americans Value Privacy Over Anti-Terror Protections

Americans Are Starting to Wake Up from their Fear-Induced Haze

“Those who give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
- Ben Franklin
The Founding Fathers valued privacy over safety. Indeed, the Revolutionary War was largely started to stop the use of spying by the British. Background here. In other words, the Founding Fathers gave up their safe life with little freedom to strive for real freedom.
The American people got spooked after 9/11, even though 9/11 was entirely foreseeable … and even the chair of the 9/11 Commission said that the attack was preventable.
But we are now remembering that liberty is more important than some mythical concept of 100% guaranteed safety.
A new AP-GfK poll released yesterday finds:
Americans are increasingly placing personal privacy ahead of being kept safe from terrorists, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. More than 60 percent of respondents said they value privacy over anti-terror protections.  SOURCE

From a Marine Corps Colonel in Afghanistan:

"So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts. Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten - straight up, no styling. "Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don't make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification. Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love - not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from your costume, makeup and your entourage. Sing 'The Star Spangled Banner' with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America, not you. And please remember, not everything has to be sung as a Negro spiritual. We're getting a little weary of that. Francis Scott Key does not need any help." Semper Fi !

Iceland: Small Country, Big Balls

Iceland let its banks fail in 2008 because they proved too big to save.
Now, the island is finding crisis-management decisions made half a decade ago have put it on a trajectory that’s turned 2 percent unemployment into a realistic goal.
While the euro area grapples with record joblessness, led by more than 25 percent in Greece and Spain, only about 4 percent of Iceland’s labor force is without work. Prime MinisterSigmundur D. Gunnlaugsson says even that’s too high.
“Politicians always have something to worry about,” the 38-year-old said in an interview last week. “We’d like to see unemployment going from where it’s now -- around 4 percent -- to under 2 percent, which may sound strange to most other western countries, but Icelanders aren’t accustomed to unemployment.”  FULL STORY

My Mind After The State Of The Union Address...

Pre-Pink Superbowls....Guess who?

Joe Biden not paying attention during the SOTU!

The Real State Of The Union

US President Barack Obama's State of the Union (SOTU) address was a somewhat surrealist spectacle. Way beyond avalanches of PR spin, the US government for a long time has not exactly done wonders for the public good. So as it advertises itself in front of a dysfunctional US Congress dismissed as repellent by an overwhelming majority of Americans - including, and expanding, on those 76% who are living paycheck to paycheck - what's left is a grand, old Hollywood production.

And Obama, of course, is a decent actor who can deliver a decent speech - certainly better than Ronnie Reagan, whom Gore Vidal used to describe as "the acting president".

The key theme of SOTU 2014 was the appalling income inequality in the US. Call it an appendix of this past week at the World Economic Forum in Davos - that snowy Vegas for the 0.00001% - in which the Masters of the Universe finally "discovered" inequality. So much inequality, in fact, that 2014 was instantly tagged by the Masters - and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe - as the new 1914, all that furiously tweeted to all corporate boardrooms of the liquid modernity elite.

As Obama got into his groove, he proclaimed that Obamacare had won; that he would resort to ruling by executive order to get things done; and that a mixed salad of platitudes and vague proposals/generalities attested to the imminent success of his agenda of improving "opportunity" as the only answer to fighting inequality. Oh yes; and that the American Dream was not in a coma. MORE

During the initial space flights, NASA discovered that biro pens didn't work under zero gravity conditions.  To beat the problem, NASA spent 6 years and $2 million in designing a pen to use in space.  The pen would work under zero gravity conditions due to pressurized ink inside. It would work under sub zero conditions, underwater, on glass and virtually any surface known to man,  The Russians used a pencil.

Police State Update

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has proposed a far-reaching new law that would force taxpayers to cover the costs of placing tracking devices on autistic children after 14-year-old autistic child Avonte Oquendo was found dead last week. The tracking devices would not be implanted, but would instead be attached to watches, ankle bracelets, belts, or shoelaces. “The program would be completely voluntary for parents and run by local law enforcement,” Schumer’s office announced. SOURCE

Holy Cow

Reuters) - Methane gas from 90 flatulent cows exploded in a German farm shed on Monday, damaging the roof and injuring one of the animals, police said.
High levels of the gas had built up in the structure in the central German town of Rasdorf, then "a static electric charge caused the gas to explode with flashes of flames," the force said in a statement.

One cow was treated for burns, a police spokesman added.

How We Should Make Politicians Travel

Watch For Splinters

Morning Chuckle

A Republican, in a wheelchair,  entered a  restaurant one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of  coffee. The  Republican looked across the restaurant and asked, "Is  that Jesus  sitting over there?"
The waitress nodded "yes," so  the  Republican requested that she give Jesus a cup of coffee, on him.
The next patron to come in was a Libertarian, with a hunched  back.  He shuffled over
to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked  the  waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the  restaurant  and asked, "Is that Jesus, over there?"
The  waitress nodded,  so the Libertarian asked her to give Jesus a cup of  hot tea, "My treat."
The third patron to come into the  restaurant was a Democrat on  crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat  down, and hollered, "Hey there  honey! How's about getting me a  cold mug of Miller Light?" He too  looked across the restaurant and  asked, "Isn't that God's boy over  there?"
The waitress nodded,  so the Democrat directed her to  give Jesus a cold beer.
"On my  bill," he said loudly.
As Jesus  got up to leave, he passed by  the Republican, touched him, and said, "For  your kindness, you are  healed." The Republican felt the strength come  back into his legs, got  up, and began to praise the Lord.
Jesus  passed by the  Libertarian, touched him, and said, "For your kindness, you  are  healed."
The Libertarian felt his back straightening up, and he   raised his hands, and he to begin to praise the Lord.
Then,  Jesus  walked towards the Democrat, just smiling.

The Democrat jumped  up and  yelled, "Don't
touch me.    I'm on full disability."

Proper Way To Greet A Liberal

My Name Is Bond

Property Taxes Pave the Road to Serfdom

Under the feudal system of the middle ages, a serf was an agricultural laborer who was bound to work on his lord's estate. The lord owned the land, and the laborer had no choice but to live on the lord's property and hand a significant amount of the fruits of his/her labor over to the lord.
A similar, but more subtle, system exists today in counties throughout the United States. Homeowners and owners of farmland are bound to pay property taxes to the County Assessor. And if they don't pay the property taxes, the assessor has the legal right -- which they essentially gave themselves -- to take the property away. The names of the local officials may not be on the deed to your house, but since they have the legal authority to seize it from you, the result is the same.
This seemed reasonable as long as the property taxes were reasonable. But as Americans have had their wages and benefits reduced, the public sector workers, whether they are unionized or not, continue to enjoy the privilege of raising property and other taxes so that their benefits, salaries, and pensions are not reduced. Teachers' unions, SEIU workers, and AFSCME workers make all or much of their income through property tax assessments. And interestingly, all give most of their money to the Democratic Party, who, since they run most urban areas of the U.S. and receive this money, are then largely responsible for the high property taxes forced upon middle class Americans.

Legalized Marijuana And Why The Government Wants Us To Go To Pot

“By this time the soma had begun to work. Eyes shone, cheeks were flushed, the inner light of universal benevolence broke out on every face in happy, friendly smiles.” — Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, 1932
On Jan. 1, Colorado legalized the sale of recreational marijuana. In 2012, Washington State legalized marijuana; the State will begin permitting pot shops this spring. Alaska may vote on a marijuana ballot measure in August, while advocates are working for legalized pot in Oregon, Arizona and Massachusetts.
A public announcement from Colorado should say: “Be calm. Feel free to become distracted. Do not focus on how miserable you are or the fact that for the first time in 70 years, middle-class job opportunities have seized up.” Then they could ask: “Are you ready for some football?”
We are 11 days shy of Super Bowl XLVIII and all the distractions that come with it. The Super Bowl is more than just a ritual. It is that celebrated Sunday when the multitudes:
  1. Gamble on the mundane (whether a team will score a safety).
  2. Wear expensive and unaffordable clothes to impress others at the party.
  3. Feast on fattening foods and chug down copious amounts of alcohol.
  4. Cheer for former ghetto kids — who are now spoiled millionaires who read at a fourth-grade level — while they crash into each other in a cycle of violence that can lead to early brain disease and death.  FULL STORY
